Opioid overuse has been described as the “shadow epidemic,” devastating communities across Ontario. Its impact on Canadians is worsened by healthcare barriers and policy gaps. Delegates design cost-effective, community-centred interventions using health economics to reduce harm and empower communities.

Explore measles resurgence through clinical and public health lenses. Using a patient case, participants work through diagnosis and management, then shift to a systems-level discussion on vaccination as primary prevention. Teams collaborate to design ethical, evidence-informed, and non-coercive strategies addressing vaccine hesitancy, access gaps, and public trust.

Black and Indigenous children and youth are disproportionately affected by systemic racism, colonial legacies, and structural inequities across health, justice, and child welfare systems. Delegates will explore how public health systems and services can work alongside both Black- and Indigenous-led community leadership to strengthen reintegration and wellness pathways.

Grounded in emergency healthcare delivery and systems design, participants apply critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Teams explore contrasting emergency department environments, identify barriers to patient flow, and propose evidence-informed strategies to improve wait times and access to care in real-world healthcare settings.

Delegates tackle the complexity of chronic pain care by designing a multidisciplinary program focused on improving patient outcomes. Delegates will develop a patient-centred care model that integrates medical, psychological, and social supports while navigating real-world constraints such as limited resources and fragmented systems.

Interactive case challenge grounded in radiological principles, designed to test clinical reasoning, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Participants will collaborate to navigate challenges within imaging-based scenarios and develop thoughtful, evidence-informed approaches in a fast-paced setting.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a widely used anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer with significant teratogenic risks when taken during pregnancy, leading to developmental abnormalities such as neural tube defects and cognitive impairments. Participants design a lab study investigating one of the many potential mechanisms of VPA’s toxicity. Teams can choose any research model—in vitro, in vivo, or human—determine a dosing regimen, and develop methods to measure their chosen mechanism while accounting for potential variabilities. These include sex differences, intrauterine position, and litter size, which are critical factors in ensuring robust and reproducible results.

This case challenge focuses on addressing a novel virus that can lead to severe complications due to immune evasion. Delegates will explore innovative immunotherapies that can enhance immune activation to improve viral clearance while also trying to mitigate excessive inflammation to prevent tissue damage. The challenge will prompt delegates to design a therapeutic strategy, propose a mechanism of action, and consider safety implications.
