He is also a Laboratory Head at the Mediterranean Institute of Life Sciences, Split, Croatia. Before being recruited to the University of Toronto in 2005, Dr. Stagljar started his career at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). He received his Ph.D. from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) under the tutelage of Professors Charles Weissmann and Markus Aebi, and completed his training in the labs of Professors Walter Schaffner (University of Zurich, Switzerland) and Stanley Fields (University of Washington, USA). He is a recognized expert in the field of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and PPI technology development. He has published over 126 research papers listed on PubMed, is the holder of 6 patents, and has been honored as one of the top inventors in Canada. His visionary leadership has led to development of the Membrane Yeast Two-Hybrid (MYTH) and Mammalian Membrane Two-Hybrid (MaMTH) technologies, both of which have revolutionized membrane PPI research. During his entire career he has been an innovator, and his most recent development of MaMTH into a drug screening platform (MaMTH-DS) as well as the SIMPL technology has the potential to dramatically improve the development of therapeutics against membrane (MaMTH-DS) and soluble (SIMPL) PPI targets. He is currently directing major proteomics projects to map how integral membrane proteins interact to produce either healthy or diseased cells, to identify novel membrane PPI therapeutic targets, and to screen for novel drugs, in particular to target lung cancer. One such newly identified and repurposed drug that targets mutated protein on the surface of lung cancer cells is currently the subject of prompt clinical study at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Stagljar works tirelessly with leading clinicians and scientists worldwide to advance research on health issues such as cancer and, since recently, COVID-19. Dr. Stagljar is also a recipient of several prestigious distinctions for his outstanding contributions to biology including the Croatian Biological Society Plaque “Zdravko Lorkovic” – the highest accolade given by the Croatian Biological Society. In 2015, the University of Toronto honoured Dr. Stagljar with "Inventor of the Year” award for his contribution to Canada’s innovation agenda and the advancement of knowledge. As principal investigator, Dr. Stagljar secured over $38 million in research funds from a range of national and international funding agencies, non-profit foundations and pharmaceutical companies, such as Orionis Biosciences, Genentech, Merck, Evotec and Novartis. For over two decades, he has used behavioral and neuroscience methods (e.g., EEG, fMRI, fNIRS) to examine the emergence and development of social cognition and social behavior and the underlying neural mechanisms. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed papers that have been cited over 18,000 times with a H-index of 70 and i10-index of 258. Since 2013, his work has been cited more than 1200 times annually. His research has been funded by funding agencies such as NIH and NSF in the US, NSERC and SSHRC in Canada, and NSFC in China. He was also a TED speaker, with his talk receiving over 10 million views, and he is the license holder of TEDx at the University of Toronto. His work has been widely reported in news outlets such as New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, and NHK. His work has been featured in several major science documentaries including Nature of Things: Born to be Good (CBC), Babies (Netflix), and Through the Wormhole (Morgan Freeman Productions). He even received the Ig Noble Prize in Neuroscience in 2014. He is also a co-inventor of Transdermal Optical Imaging, a novel contactless technology that uses advanced biosignal processing and machine learning to decode facial blood flow from videos captured by conventional digital cameras. An Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Queen’s University and Clinical Director of Community Psychiatry Programs at Providence Care, he provides care through an Assertive Community Treatment Team with certification in both general and addiction psychiatry. His broad clinical experience spans addiction and substance use, emergency and intensive care psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, psychosexual medicine, and cross-cultural mental health. As Chair of the Commission on Black Medical Students at Queen’s, he plays a key role in advancing equity, representation, and institutional change within medical education. Dr. Ayonrinde’s research and advocacy focus on global mental health and the experiences of marginalized and equity-seeking populations, including individuals with severe mental illness, racialized communities, and people living in poverty. He has led and contributed to local, national, and international collaborations, with particular interests in stigma reduction, physician and occupational wellness, and cannabis education across the lifespan. His work includes game-based learning innovations to help learners understand complex health behaviours and diversity issues, and he has received multiple awards for education and knowledge translation. An Associate Professor of Surgery and Reznick Scholar in Health Professions Education at Queen’s University, his work centers on a harder question: what actually allows people, teams, and systems to perform well when the stakes are highest in the operating room. He serves as Director of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility (EDIIA) in the MD Program, where he established the first MD Program EDIIA Committee in North America - embedding equity, accountability, and belonging into curriculum, admissions, mentorship, and wellness. As Director of Interprofessional Education, he is co-leading the implementation of a 20% shared interprofessional curriculum across medicine, nursing, and rehabilitation therapy, advancing Queen’s Health Sciences’ Radical Collaboration mandate and intentionally disrupting siloed training models that no longer serve modern healthcare. Dr. Chung is the founder and Principal Investigator of the Chung Lab, a 70+ member multidisciplinary research team studying operating room team resiliency, psychological safety, interprofessional learning, and surgical quality improvement. His work spans educational scholarship and rigorous clinical investigation: he is the Principal Investigator of the DICE Trial, a randomized controlled trial comparing treatments for empyema, and leads the EndoFLIP Trial, examining how novel intraoperative technologies can improve short- and long-term outcomes in hiatal hernia surgery. Her program of research focuses on global experiences of birthing care, with particular attention to the perspectives of midwives, nurses, birthing people, and their families, as well as the dynamics of collaboration across these groups. She uses qualitative approaches and applies a gender lens to explore how historical, cultural, and social forces shape current practices and power relations in birthing care. She also has expertise in Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) systematic review methodology, particularly the meta-aggregation of qualitative data. She currently serves as the Associate Dean of Life Sciences and Biochemistry within the Faculty of Health Sciences, where she contributes to interdisciplinary teaching, research, and program development across the life sciences and health domains. Dr. Winn’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of xenobiotic-initiated developmental toxicity, exploring how pharmaceutical drugs and environmental chemicals can lead to oxidative stress and teratogenesis during embryonic development. Her work uses in vivo and cell-based models to investigate how these agents affect embryonic signalling pathways and DNA recombination processes, advancing understanding of developmental risk factors. In addition to her research, Dr. Winn has played a leadership role in graduate education and interdisciplinary program innovation. She has overseen graduate administration, contributed to the creation of combined BScH/MSc pathways, and developed proposals for new interdisciplinary graduate programs, including in biomedical informatics and medical sciences.
